Science

“For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…” (Romans 1:20). We seek to show that science is part of God’s natural revelation to man through observation, experimentation, and study of the physical universe.  Our goal is to help students develop an appreciation and desire to know and glorify the God of such unlimited resources and to be faithful stewards thereof.

Science Curriculum Goals

In accordance with the philosophy of history, we will achieve our purpose as stated in our philosophy of science by encouraging the students to:

  • Develop an appreciation for God as the Creator and for the natural laws of His Creation
  • Develop knowledge of scientific truth in the light of scriptural truth
  • Develop an understanding of and encourage the use of the scientific method, using materials in a safe, responsible way
  • Develop a Biblical view of themselves and their relationship to the world as stewards of God’s Creation
  • Critically evaluate other points of view from a Biblical perspective.

Physical Science

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John  1: 4,5) Jesus is the Light of the world.  The students will receive instruction in the physical laws that the Lord has created and to understand the basic principles involved in physics and chemistry. Included in the course is the study of Motion, Energy, Simple Machines, Light, Sound, and an overview of Chemistry, with the study of the states of matter and structure of matter. The students will develop the ability to use mathematical laws to solve problems and the use of experimentation to demonstrate these laws. Also included are two sections using a video seminar on the Creation-Evolution topic.

  • Prerequisite:  None
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  9th

Biology

Jesus told his disciples in John 14:6, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Biology involves the study of that Life. The student will explore and experience the world of living things, the science of Biology, through the use of classroom instruction, reading, research, discussions, participation in group and individual projects, using biological experimentation, practicing basic microbiological techniques, and dissecting several specimens. Topics include the Chemistry of Life, Cells, Cellular Energy, Genetics, Modern Biology, Creation and Evolution, and a survey of the Animal Kingdom. Students in 10th Grade will be required to participate in the annual Science Fair.

  • Prerequisite:  None
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  9th/10th

Honors Chemistry

In Genesis 1:9-10, on the third day, God created the dry land out of the water. In Chemistry, we study the incredible variety of materials He created on that day. The students will receive instruction in the basic principles of the study of matter and the science of Chemistry by using reading, experimentation and reporting, researching scientific information, doing a science fair project, and class activities, including lecture notes, worksheets, and lab work. Topics covered include Atomic Structure, Stoichiometry, Gas Laws, writing formulas and equations, solutions, and an introduction to Organic Chemistry.

  • Prerequisite:  Departmental Approval
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  10th

Advanced Placement Biology

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”  (John 1:4)  The students will receive instruction in the study of life, biology, with a deeper examination of the processes involved in living systems.  The course topics include:  The Chemistry of Cells, Cells, Cellular Energy, Heredity, Molecular Genetics, Creation and Evolution, and Ecology.  This course uses extensive experimentation to learn about how these systems work.  This course is designed to prepare students for more demanding biological pursuits and for taking the AP test at the end of the year, if desired.

  • Prerequisite:  Departmental Approval
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  11th

Chemistry

Chemistry is the ongoing investigation of matter: its composition, structure, properties, and changes. The students will receive instruction by using reading, lecturing, experimentation, researching, and class activities, including worksheets, and small group interaction. Lab work is included to demonstrate the principles of chemistry learned in the classroom. Topics include Atomic Structure, Elements and Compounds, Bonding, Electronegativity, Writing Chemical Formulas and Equations, the Periodic Table, Gas Laws, and Stoichiometry.

  • Prerequisite:  None
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  11th

Physics

“For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.” (Colossians 1:29)  Physics is the study of the basic forces of the natural world that God has created. The student will receive instruction in the principles of energy and motion, momentum, work, power, simple machines, gravity, electricity, light, sound, magnetism, and other forms of electromagnetic energy. Students will be involved in using formulas to calculate answers, graphing information, and working on a class participation project.

  • Prerequisite:  Departmental Approval
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  12th

Human Anatomy & Physiology

“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” (Psalm 139:14) The students will explore the wonders of the human body, examining in depth different systems of the body. This course will cover the structure and functions of the human body as created by our infinitely intelligent Creator. Students study the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems.

  • Prerequisite:  None
  • Credit:  1.00
  • Grade Level:  12th
