2.00 ACADEMICS
2.01 Report Cards and Grades
Students will receive report cards 4 times a year. Major subjects receive percentage grades.

2.02 Weighted Courses and Class Rank
In calculating a student’s cumulative grade point average, the courses noted below are assigned more weight. Weighted grades are determined by multiplying the final average by the weighted value (i.e., 87 average x 1.05 value now equals 91.35).

2.03 Interim/Quarter Reports
Interim/quarter reports will be given to each student at the midpoint of each quarter, as well as each quarter’s ending. Each report will be given in a report card envelope. With the exception of the end-of-year report, this envelope must be signed and returned to the school within three days of each report distribution.
2.04 Parent-Teacher Conferences
Near the end of the first marking period, a day will be set aside for Parent-Teacher Conferences. This will be the time for parents to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their children. No students will be in school on this day. However, parent-teachers conferences are not limited to this special day. Conferences and other contacts between parents and teachers are encouraged at all times throughout the school year. Appointments should be made in advance.
2.05 Honor Roll and Honor Cards
- 2.051 Honor Roll will be based on taking 5 or more major subjects and the following:
- Distinguished Honors - "A's" (93% or above) in all major subjects; no failing grade in any minor subject.
- Honors - No grade lower than a B- (85) in any major subject; no failing grade in any minor subject.
- 2.052 Honors Cards will be issued to students in grades 9-12 who achieve Distinguished Honors or Honors. The holders of these cards may waive daily assignments in their classes up to a total of six assignments per grading period (with no more than one waived in each class).
- Note: Teachers may designate certain daily assignments that may not be waived, but this must be done during the class period in which the assignment was given.
2.06 Final Exams
- 2.061 All students in grades 9-12 are scheduled to take mid-term and final exams. These exams are calculated as 1/5 of the yearly grade. Exceptions are made for students with learning disabilities. All final exams are to be taken on the scheduled date or arrangements must be made to complete the exams within one week after school's close. A $10.00 fee will be charged per exam (mid-terms and finals) for any exam not taken at the scheduled time. Students in 7th grade take finals in English and math only. Students in 8th grade take finals in English, math, history, and science.
- 2.062 Exemptions from Final Examinations: Seniors and those taking senior courses who achieve a 93.0 (no rounding up) or higher average in any subject over the four marking periods are exempted from the final exam in that subject. This exemption does not apply to mid-year examinations, except for courses that are one semester in length. No individualized extra credit may be given to students to increase their grade so that they may be exempt.
- 2.063 Tuition must be paid in full before a student can take final exams.
- 2.064 Any student failing a course with a 59% or below average cannot make up that course in a summer school.
2.07 Promotion And Course Drop
- 2.071 Promotion: Students in middle school must pass a minimum of 4 major subjects to be promoted (included must be English & math). Senior high students are promoted as follows: 5½ credits to enter 10th grade, 11½ to enter 11th grade, and 17½ to enter 12th grade.
- 2.072 Course Drop/Add Policy (Grades 9-12): Elective courses may be dropped/added during the first month of school without any penalty. Courses dropped after that will be recorded as W/P (withdrawal-passing) or W/F (withdrawal-failing). Permission to drop a course must be secured from both the student's parents and the administration. No course may be dropped after the first marking period. All students are required to carry a minimum of six credits.
- 2.073 At the end of each year, the faculty will meet with the administrator to determine if any current students should be denied admission for the next academic year. Any students named will be referred to the Judicial Committee for further consideration.
- 2.074 Any student failing a mandatory subject (excluding Bible) will make that subject up in a local public school summer program, or at BBS. A maximum of two courses may be made up. Upon successful completion of summer work, a grade of 70% will go on the student's transcript. All students must pass Bible each year to be promoted.
- 2.075 Enrichment Classes: Enrichment classes will require a minimum of 80 hours of which 30 must be in the classroom. Remedial classes will require a minimum of 30 hours of which 20 must be in the classroom. No AP or advanced courses can be taken nor can more than one course be taken in any given discipline.
2.08 Graduation Requirements
- 2.081 All students will be required to accumulate 24 credits in order to graduate from high school. Students who fail one required course will be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremonies. Students failing two or more required subjects will not be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies.
- 2.082 Seniors must attend all graduation practices. A $25.00 fine will be assessed for any unexcused absence. A $10.00 fine will be assessed for arriving late.
- 2.083 A student’s diploma, report card, records, and any meritorious awards will be withheld until all financial obligations to the school are met.
- 2.084 A senior student’s privilege to participate in the graduation ceremony may be withheld even if all course work has been satisfactorily completed. The Administrative Team will make the final decision.
2.09 Curriculum Requirements
Specific Course Requirements - All students will be placed in the Track I or Track II program (see following chart). Placement will be determined by the student's previous academic achievement, faculty recommendation, parental input, and final administrative approval. The Track I program is designed for those students desiring to go to an academically challenging four-year college. The Track II program is designed to prepare students for community college, vocational school, or the work world.

2.10 Homework
- Please note the following procedures for securing homework assignments:
- All requests for homework assignments for students absent for more than one day must be called in to the office by 10:00 a.m. Calls received after 10:00 a.m. may not be serviced until the next day.
- When you call, you must tell the secretary which student will be getting your child's assignments.
- The assignments will be ready by 2:30 p.m. that day.
- It is the parents' responsibility to get the proper textbooks. You will need to have your child tell you his or her locker number and combination.
- We will keep homework assignments light on Wednesday evenings so that students may participate in Prayer Meeting and youth activities.
2.11 Academic Awards
- 2.111 National Honor Society: Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 are eligible for induction into the National Honor Society. The committee bases its selection on excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. In addition, a student's spiritual commitment will be evaluated. Current members of the society must maintain all the standards outlined above. Failure to do so may result in dismissal from the National Honor Society.
- 2.112 National Junior Honor Society: Students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible for induction into the National Junior Honor Society. The same criteria found in section 2.111 is used.
- 2.113 Gold and Silver Award: Honor Roll status must be achieved each of the first three marking periods. Students making the Distinguished Honor Roll each of the first three marking periods will receive gold certificates. Students making any combination of Honors and Distinguished Honors will receive silver certificates.
- 2.114 Presidential Award for Educational Excellence: This award is presented by the office of the President of the United States to students in 8th and 12th grades. Students must have a 90% average or above from the previous school year and score in the upper 15th percentile on a national standardized test in math or reading from a previous year.
- 2.115 Valedictorian and Salutatorian: Each year a valedictorian and salutatorian are chosen from the senior class. Only those students having completed two or more years of study at BBS are eligible.
- 2.116 Department Awards: The student with the highest cumulative average in each of the major academic subjects will be recognized at the graduation ceremonies. Only those students having completed two or more years at BBS are eligible. In addition, to be eligible for the science and math awards, a student must take four years of academic math and science. To be eligible for the foreign language award, a student must take three years of a foreign language, of which two must be taken at BBS.
- 2.117 Honors Diploma: Students in Track I with an “A” overall average and in good standing with the school will be awarded an Honors Diploma at graduation.
2.12 Standardized Tests
All sophomores will take the PLAN test. Sophomores and juniors may take the PSAT test upon parental approval. Students planning to attend college are encouraged to take the SAT or ACT tests in their junior and senior years at a local public high school. Students in 8th grade take the Explore Test, a middle school version of the ACT test.
2.13 Academic Probation
Students failing three or more major subjects at the end of each grading period are put on academic probation for the next grading period. Failure to demonstrate improvement by the end of the next grading period may result in dismissal from the school. The Administration will make the final decision. The advisor will meet three times (days 12, 23, and 33) with the student during the grading period. The faculty will update the advisor on the student’s academic status, and reports will be sent to the parents.
2.14 AP Courses
Advanced Placement (AP) is a program of college-level courses and exams that gives students the opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or credit in college. The following courses are offered: Calculus, Biology, English Language, English Literature, European History, U.S. History, and Psychology. To register for AP courses, a student must have received an “A” average in the previous sequential department course or a “B” average and faculty recommendation.
2.15 Honors Math
Students are placed in the honors math program according to the criteria established by the school. For a copy of the policy, please contact the M.S./H.S. office.
2.16 Access to Student Records
Only parents, legal guardians, and school officials have access to students' cumulative records. All other persons and agencies desiring records must submit to the administration the school's cumulative record release form signed by at least one of the parents, or legal guardian.
2.17 Plagiarism
Students submitting a major project or paper written or done by someone else will be dismissed from that class for the year and receive an “F” on their report card. Also, included will be a note that the “F” was given because of a violation of the school’s plagiarism code.
Students who plagiarize in any other way will receive a “0” on their work, will be required to do the work, and will be disciplined. Punishment will be determined by the principal in consultation with the teacher.
2.18 Transfer Students
- Diplomas: To be awarded a Diploma, a students last six credits must be taken at BBS.
- Class Rank: To be ranked with ones graduating class, at least 12 credits must be taken at BBS.
- Transcripts, Class Rank and GPA’s: Reflect only courses taken at BBS.
- Students wishing to advance in standing or add credits through courses in summer school at another institution are subject to a final exam at BBS at the conclusion of the course. This does not apply to courses taken for remediation or courses taken at college level.
- VoTech course credits and grades will be on BBS transcripts, but class rank will not be included.
